Anchorage resident MABEL ROSE JUSTUS, 79, died Feb. 1, 2001, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Visitation was at Witzleben's Bragaw Chapel with a funeral following. Burial was at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Justus was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, and moved to Alaska in 1949. She was raised in the Yukon. Mrs. Justus worked for Cole's Cleaners during the '50s and Snow White Cleaners during the '60s. From 1966 until her retirement in 1986, she worked for Northwest Airlines Flight Kitchen, which became the International Inflight Catering Co. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, cooking and baking. Her family said: ''Mabel Justus prided herself as a true old-fashioned Alaskan with over 50 years living in Anchorage to prove it. She was devoted to her husband, Norm, as if they lived as one. She was known for her talent in cooking which included corned beef and cabbage, fantastically-flavored pot roast, fish, spare ribs, pies, along with her unsurpassed canning abilities with plenty of canned moose for the next hunt with her husband in the fall of the year. ''She loved her garden and, of course, the result of her effort. When spring came, the fishing bug caught her and alder was cut and readied for production of the tastiest smoked salmon in Spenard. In the most recent years, she became a fan of the food channels increasing her knowledge of gourmet cooking. ''Her friends have come and gone, those remaining will never forget her as a hard worker. She did not like free-loaders, and was a loving person who lived by the motto 'Make the most of what you yet may spend, before you too, into the dust descend.' ''
Mrs. Justus is survived by her sister, Florence ''Dolly'' Richards; niece, Sharon Wilkinson and her husband Burt, all of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; stepdaughter, Colleen Irving and her husband George of Las Vegas, Nev.; good friends, Mary Ann and Ken Krasselt of Anchorage; dog, Sassy; and many other nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be directed to Providence Alaska Medical Center, 3200 Providence Drive, Anchorage 99508.
