MICHAEL GASPER VINCENT
On Sunday, August 7, 2011, Michael Gasper Vincent (Vicente) died suddenly at his home in Damascus, Maryland with his loving wife by his side. Born in St. Michael's, the Azores, Portugal, in March 1944.
In 1954, he came to the United States and became a U.S. Citizen. He lived in Fall River, Massachusetts until entering the United States Navy at the age of 17 in July of 1961. He served abroad the U.S.S. Randolph as an Officer during the Cuban Missile Crises and was aboard the ship for the John Glenn Space Capsule Recovery Mission.
He then served in the US Navy Reserves before joining the District Heights Police Dept. and then the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department,in 1973. During his career as a Police Officer, he served in four districts and various divisions within the dept. achieving the rank of Sergeant,serving in the Second District until his retirement in 2004 after 31 years of service. He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Association of Retired Police, and the American Legion, Post 171, Damascus, Maryland.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Maria Gasper Vincent, and late father, Joseph Mellow Vincent (Vicente). Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Sandra E. Podskalny-Vincent, Damascus, MD; two daughters, Dawn M. Oden of Myersville, MD and Krystal M. Lee of Great Mills, MD; one son, Michael A. Vincent of Prince Frederick, Maryland; one sister, Marie F. Raposo of Fall River, Massachusetts; two grandchildren, Devin Vincent and Taylor Lee; one niece, Kim Macay of Fall River, MA; one nephew, Keith Raposo of Fall River, MA, and numerous cousins.
Family will receive friends on Monday, August 15, 2011 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, Damascus, MD 20872. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 9250 Damascus, Road, Damascus, MD 20872. Father Joseph B. Pierce will officiate.
Burial will be held On October 12, 2011 Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, with full Military Honors.
