Abe Villers (1903-1955)
The following newspaper article, hand-identified as being from the June 6, 1955, Tribune, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Heart Attack Fatal to Abe Villers, 52
Sudden death came to Abe Villers, 52, shortly after noon Wednesday, as he worked in the Lowell cemetery, where for 27 years he had served as supervisor. His son, Joe, home on vacation from Moberly, Missouri, where both he and his wife are teachers, was with him when the fatal heart attack struck. Lowell firemen were summoned, but oxygen and respiration failed to revive him. Although Mr. Villers worked everyday, he had experienced some ill health this past year.
Mr. Villers was a conscientious worker, and under his care the Lowell cemetery has been developed and become widely known for its beauty and meticulous grooming. Abe will be sorely missed.
Abraham Villers was born on January 6, 1903, in Lexington, Missouri, the son of the late Abraham and Frances Villers. He was married to Irma Carroll on March 8, 1927, and the couple have lived here ever since. Mrs. Villers has been employed at Roberts Drug Store for several years.
Surviving with his wife Irma and eldest son Joseph and wife Shirley, are two other sons, George and Carl, of Lowell. A daughter, Elizabeth, died in 1928. He has three sisters, Mrs. Anna Carroll of Lowell, Mrs. Pearl McCl[el]land, Sandoval, Ill., Mrs. Ethel Geist, Valparaiso; two brothers Heber, Lexington, Mo., and Linzy, of Carney, Mo., besides many nephews and nieces, and a host of friends.
Rev. E.L. Worley will officiate at memorial services which will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday; June 4 in the Sheets Funeral Home. Interment will be made in the Lowell cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of John Eskridge and K.A. Sheets.
