Maria Estefana Valvanera Villa, daughter of Juan Joseph Villa (from the area near the Presidio de Tubac, Sonora) and Maria Paula Martinez, was born near the Santa Barbara Presidio where her father was a "soldado de cuera". She was baptized in the Yglesia (Chapel) of the Presidio of Santa Barbara, California, the third entry in the Book of Baptisms on 30 Oct 1782.(BP Baptism 00003 ECPP)
At age 13 Estefana married Jose de la Cruz Bermudes a 28 yr old "soldado de la Compaņia de Santa Barbara". Their marriage is recorded in the Mission San Gabriel register (SG Marriage 00559 ECPP) In this marriage record Maria Estefana Villa is identified as being originally from Mission San Buenaventura, with her father Jose Villa being originally from San Miguel de Orcasitas and her mother Maria Paulina [Martinez] being originally from Real de Santa Ana.
Estefana Villa, as she is identified in her burial record, must have died suddenly, there was no illness and she did not receive the Sacraments. The following is from her burial entry:
En Cemeterio de la Yglesia.
Estefana Villa originaria y existente en Pueblo de Los Angeles casada con Jose Bermudes; "no recibio sacramento alguno por no dar lugar la enfermedad" Fr Jose Sanchez (SG Burial 04544 ECPP)
