Lorraine J. Eastway entered eternal life on Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Tendercare Alpena in Alpena, Michigan. She was 91 years old. Prior to moving to Alpena she lived in the LeRoy, Michigan, area for 50 years.
Lorraine was born July 15, 1919 in McDonald, Pennsylvania, to the late John and Josephine (Chiron) Vidal. She was one of ten children. Her mother died when she was only 16 and Lorraine became a "mother" to the children who were still at home. In 1943 she moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she was employed as a welder building airplanes.
In 1947, she married Ray Eastway. While she lived in the Detroit area two children were born, a son Sandy and a daughter Germaine. In 1954, the family moved to LeRoy. When the children were old enough, Lorraine began working outside the home, first at Wolverine glove factory in Reed City, and then at Evart Products plastics plant in Evart.
In 1973, her daughter died of multiple sclerosis after a yearlong battle in which Lorraine stayed home to care for Germaine. Lorraine retired from Evart Products in 1982.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting, cards, trips to the casino, and bingo. In 1995, her husband Ray died of Parkinson disease after a several-year struggle in which Lorraine took care of him at home. In 2005, she sold her home in LeRoy and moved to Bethany AFC in Alpena. In February of 2010 she moved to Tendercare Alpena.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Louie Vidal, and sisters Louise Stewart, Susanne Zamanski, Germaine Griffith, Emily Pense, Marie Riehl, and Emma Koivupalo.
She is survived by her son, Sandy (Betty) Eastway of Alpena, Mich.; a sister, Julia (Jack) Lefler of Northville, Mich.; a brother-in-law Donald Riehl of Myerstown, Pa., and a brother-in-law Jack (Joann) Eastway of Evart, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
