Wendell served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F #42-5791, 334th Bomber Squadron, 95th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Baltimore, Maryland and worked in Summit County, Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 11, 1941, prior to the war, in Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He was noted as being employed at an Amusement Attendant and also as Single, without dependents.

Evidently Wendell, being born in Maryland, and traveling with an Amusement Company that was based in Ohio ... had enlisted in the Army while they were in Mississippi during a show.

Wendell died in the "Line Of Duty" when his B-17F when it crashed two miles southwest of Newmarket, Wales, United Kingdom during the war. (see below)

Wendell was One of eighteen Army personnel killed (6 crew, 12 passengers) when their B-17F struck a hill, two miles southwest of Newmarket, Wales, United Kingdom.

The bomber had departed for an " R & R " flight to Scotland.

Flying through heavy cloud cover and in freezing fog, the navigator relied on maps, and when the pilot thought they had reached the coast, descended out of the clouds but they were off course by four miles and still over mountainous terrain.
