Robert was born Dec. 24, 1919, in Peoria, Ill., to William C. and Gertrude T. Koegel Velpel. He married Mary Margaret Scrivner on Aug. 11, 1945, in Peoria, Ill. Mary preceded him in death on Dec. 6, 1995.
Surviving are his daughter, Kathleen Knell of Peoria, Ill.; his son, John (Karen) Velpel of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Maria Durr, Heather (Tim) Brown, Robert (Jessica) Velpel and Andrew (Andrea) Velpel; and five great-grandchildren, Hailey Brown, Wolfgang Velpel, Rayna Velpel, Madison Velpel and Dominic Velpel.
Robert was preceded in death by his two brothers, Raymond and William Velpel; and his infant sister, Geraldine Velpel.
Robert was a fireman working in the powerhouse for Hiram-Walker and Witco Co. for more than 25 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a veteran of the Army, serving from 1941 to 1945 as a technician fifth grade.
Robert loved Chicago sports. He was an avid Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
