The daughter of Caspar and Margaret Urbach, who had emmigrated from Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany and settled in Weston, Lewis Co., Virginia, she married John W. Varney,I about 1870 and began her family there. They later settled in Alexandria and were members of Del Ray United Methodist Church. The grave of Mary E.Varney in Bethel Cemetery, Alexandria, VA is easily reached along a path directly across Payne St. from Gibbon St. toward Hamilton. It is in section E just to the right of the pathway, and is the 2nd section in from Payne St. - The headstone reads: VARNEY/ JOHN W. VARNEY / 1844-1909 / MARY E. VARNEY / 1845-1928 / 1887- MAE V. COCKRELL -1912 / 1911 - MALCOLM VARNEY NALLS - 1913 / 1917 - ARCHIBALD JACOB NALLS, JR. -1918.

Having just read this memorial for the 1st time I find it interesting to find that my 'Burkhardt' family came from that same region of Germany & left as they were Lutheran & being persecuted, in the mid 1700's. May she Rest In Peace. With Respect,
