Nadine Harden, 93, passed away July 6, 2011.
She was born May 17, 1918, near Kirksville, Mo., the elder daughter of Frank and Lallie VanSickle. She graduated from Brashear schools and Northeast Missouri State Teachers College.
Nadine undertook a teaching career that spanned 41 years, beginning in a one-room school when she was just 16. She finished her last 18 years teaching college preparatory English at Alton High School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Harden, longtime physics teacher at Alton High School, in 1978.
Cecil and Nadine retired to South Carolina's Grand Strand in 1975 to enjoy warmer weather and to be nearer to family. Nadine became an avid saltwater angler and traveler. Her excursions included visits to Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji, Kenya, Tanganyika, the Panama Canal and Alaska.
She is survived by her son, Van, of Surfside Beach, S.C.; a grandson, Robert L. Harden of Surfside Beach and the University of South Carolina; and granddaughter, Mrs. Amanda L. Grigg (Dan) of Greensboro, N.C. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Sue Salladay (Robert) of Sarasota, Fla.; a niece, Jill Salladay, of Atlanta, Ga.; and a grandniece, Tara Kopp, of Bogart, Ga.
She is also survived by childhood playmate and lifelong best friend, Mrs. Neva Sleeth of Brashear and Kirksville.
Local services will be private, with arrangements handled by Myrtle Beach Funeral Home. A memorial service in Alton will be announced later.
