Mrs. Ella Coates VanderVeer
Mrs. Ella Coates VanderVeer, aged eighty-three years, for many years a highly esteemed resident of this place, died Thursday, June 12th, in a hospital at Port Chester. She had been in frail health for a long time, but her last serious illness was of brief duration.
Quiet and unassuming, she lived a simple life without any show or ostentation, her greatest interest being in her home to which she was always particularly devoted. Possessed of very strong personal convictions, she nevertheless respected the rights and convictions of others and was always of a very calm and serene disposition. She was born here in November, 1857, a daughter of Elbert and Lucy Ann (Bennett) Coates.
She was married many years ago to Luther VanderVeer who died here in July, 1932, and soon afterwards Mrs. VanderVeer moved to Port Chester, to be with her daughter who is a member of the public school faculty. For many years her home was on the Coates homestead farm here in the house now occupied by Chris Hanson.
She is survived by one daughter, Miss Ethel VanderVeer of Port Chester, and one brother, Elbert Coates of Garden City, L.I.
The body was brought here by funeral director J. A. Shaw of Port Chester and funeral services in charge of funeral director Revo Tillapaugh of Schenevus were held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of her nephew, Mark Coates Cadwell. The Rev. Walter A. Miller, pastor of Westville Baptist church officiated and there was a great number of beautiful floral tributes. Burial was in the VandeVeer plot of the Westville Cemetery.
