When Mary Jane VanArsdale was born on October 1, 1863, in New Jersey, her father Nathaniel Horton VanArsdale, was 25 and her mother Margretta Sanford-VanArsdale, was 27. In 1880, Mary J. VanArsdale lived in Jefferson, Iowa with her father, mother, and 2 sisters Nettie VanArsdale-Tate (1867-1926) & Hattie VanArsdale-Willard (b.1870). She married George Brown on May 24, 1881, in Harrison county, Iowa. She had five children with George by the time she was 25. They were George Horton Brown (1883-1977), Nettie Gertrude Brown-Lang, Margaret Ann Brown-Crandall, Harriet "Hattie" Brown-Fitch, and Thomas Nathaniel Brown (1889-1953). She died as a young mother in about 1890 in Harrison, Iowa, at the age of 26, and was buried in Linwood Cemetery.
After Mary's death, George Brown was later remarried to Rachel Jane Frazier-Brown and had more children; Ruth, Irving Lee, Mary Ann, Martha Eloise, and Lila Rae Brown. Rachel raised Mary Jane's children as her own with their father George.
