Susie Van Wagoner Batten:

After an illness extending over a period of three years, Susie Van Wagoner Batten, wife of George W. Batten, passed peacefully away at her home, 56 East avenue, at 9:40 o'clock Friday night.

The deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Van Wagoner, now both deceased. She was born in the town of Somerset on July 24, 1858, and resided there until she was 9 years of age when her parents removed to this city.Mrs. Batten in her childhood became associated with the First Presbyterian church and until the day of her death she was a consistent member of the same. Previous to her illness she was very active in the work of the King's Daughters, the Missionary societies and other church work, being ever willing for any task and lending a helping hand to the poor and needy at all times.

Three years ago she was stricken with rheumatism which was followed by a complication of diseases. Medical science offered no relief and this past winter she went to Southern Pines, N.C., for her health. Under the balmy skies she improved in health and returned to Lockport three weeks ago. A cold developed into pleuropneumonia and she failed rapidly during the past week. With a Christian fortitude she calmly awaited the end. Her unswerving faith in the Supreme Being giving her strength during her long period of suffering.

In 1888 she was united in marriage with George W. Batten and one daughter, Inez, blessed their union. Mrs. Batten was a dutiful wife, a kind and loving mother, and a sympathetic neighbor. To know her was to love her. She will be missed most by those who knew her best.

Besides her husband and daughter she is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Frederick Ayer of Paoina, Col.; Mrs. D. D. Sheldon of New York; Mrs. Henry Matthews of Colorado; Mrs. Homer D. Mead of Somerset, and Mrs. Frank Barber of Brooklyn, and two brothers, Albert and Stephen Van Wagoner of Effingham, Kan.

The funeral will be from the home, 56 East avenue, at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon. The burial will be in Glenwood.
