Mahlon VanWagenen died of Bright's disease at his home in Corning, Sunday, September, 6, 1914, aged 81 years, 9 months and 11 days. The Funeral services were held at his residence Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. F. L. Roper, of the Baptist Church officiating, assisted by Rev. H. C. Guy, of the Christian Church. Burial was made in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Mr. VanWagenen was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, October 25, 1832, and was the last member of his father's family of five sons and five daughters. He was married to Miss Eunice Nott, June 29, 1854, and to this union were born five children, all of whom are living. They are Lawrence and Isaac, of Corning; George, of Clarks, Nebr.; Mrs. Mary Dewees, Corning, and John, Corning. Mrs. VanWagenen also survives the husband.
In 1855 Mahlon VanWagenen settled in Washington County, then soon removed to Henry County, where he resided until about 35 years ago, when he came to Adams county, settling on a farm north of Corning. Mr. VanWagenen was for years an active member of the United Brethren Church, but during the later years old age had deprived him of some of the church privileges. In his passing, Adams County loses one of her pioneer citizens; a man of sterling character, a loving husband, kind father, and good neighbor. The community extends sincere sympathy to the mourning ones.
