Robert E. Van Sickel
(April 15, 1930 - November 27, 2014)

Robert E. Van Sickel, 84, of Ursina, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2014 at his home. He was born April 15, 1930, a son of Ralph W. and Carrie (Forquer) Van Sickel. His parents and an infant brother, Donald preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris E. (Augustine), daughter, Christine, wife of Dr. James E. Richey, Johnstown and son, William E., Ursina; grandchildren, Jonathan D. Wetmiller and wife, Kerry, Baltimore, MD, and Timothy R. Wetmiller, Seattle, WA. Bob was a graduate of Confluence High School, Class of 1947. He attended Bethany College where he played on the football and baseball teams. He hauled lumber, mine posts, and steel for a number of years. In 1956 he began a banking career. He managed banks in Markleysburg, Meyersdale, Stoystown and Berlin. He was the Senior Vice President in charge of Loan Administration at National Bank of Western Pennsylvania. He then joined a consulting firm working at banks in eastern PA and MD. He was a substitute teacher at Somerset Vo-Tech for several years and a caretaker at Yough Housing in Confluence. He had a pilot’s license and made his first solo flight at age 17. He also owned his own plane for several years. Bob was an avid golfer, who loved Middlecreek Golf Course and was treasurer of the Industrial Golf League for many years. He was most proud of his induction into the Somerset County Baseball Hall of Fame. At one point, he was invited to a tryout camp for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a catcher. He was a loyal fan of the Pirates and Steelers. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Humbert Funeral Home in Confluence, where a service will be held at 1 PM Sunday, November 30, 2014 with Rev. Dr. Arthur J. Gotjen officiating. Interment in Ursina Cemetery. The family suggests contributions in Bob’s memory to Turkeyfoot Valley Historical Society, PO Box 44, Confluence, PA 15424 or to Via Quest Hospice, 612 Park Ave., Monongahela, PA 15063.
