Death: Jul. 9, 1905

Mary Jane Van Pelt was one of ten children born to William S. Van Pelt (1799-1851) and his wife Mary "Polly" Carrigan (c.1800-1840s). William S. Van Pelt was the son of Simon Van Pelt, Jr. (1738-1799) and Ruth Reed. Mary "Polly" Carrigan was the daughter of James Carrigan, Jr. (c. 1770-Feb. 2, 1840) and his wife Margaret.

Mary Jane Van Pelt married Levi Bell (1812-1893) on 16 Dec., 1858, his second wife. He was a son of Walter Bell and Hannah Ross. Mary Jane and Levi had six children:

Minnie (Minerva?) Bell (17 Dec. 1860-26 May 1892) married Ernest A. Benson in 1886.

Mary Rhetta Bell (25 Aug. 1862-7 July 1947) married Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902, son of John Andrew Field and his wife Mary Adeline Wilkinson) on 29 February 1888. They had eight children.

Margaret "Maggie" Bell (7 Sept. 1864-19 April 1949) married Samuel Pressley Kerr (1876-1929, son of Captain William Alexander Kerr and Annis Rebecca Lawson) on 21 Dec. 1911. They had no children.

James Neil Bell (25 March 1867-31 March 1929) never married. Lived in Greenville, SC. His widowed sister, Mary Rhetta Bell Field, lived with him for a time, and he helped her sons to go to college.

Woodly Fain Bell (28 Oct. 1868-20 June 1959) married Columbus Williamson Ritch (1853-1921, a son of Elijah Ritch and Elizabeth Morris) sometime around 1898, his second wife. They had two daughters and resided at Newell, Mecklenburg County, N. C.

Bettie I. (probably Elizabeth Isabella) Bell (5 Feb. 1870-26 July 1888). She died of consumption (tuberculosis) at the age of 18.

After Levi Bell's death, Mary Jane appears to have moved to the city of Charlotte where she kept a boarding house next door to St. Peter's Hospital. (That was one of the acceptable occupations for a genteel widow in 1900.) Apparently, however, she died back home at Coddle Creek.
