PETRONELLA CORNELIA VAN LEEUWEN HIEMSTRA
June 22, 1920 - June 17, 2011

Former East County resident Petronella Cornelia Van Leeuwen Hiemstra died Friday, June 17, in Mercer Island, Wash. She was 90.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2420 Fairview Ave., Fairview. A reception and interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Gresham.

Nell was born June 22, 1920, in Zoeterwoude, Netherlands, to Geerlof and Petronella Van Leeuwen. She immigrated to the United States in 1937 with her family. In 1946, she married Art Hiemstra, who preceded her in death in 1968.

Nell raised five children largely on her own following the death of her husband. Nell had a sharp and intuitive mind, a constant smile and a crossword puzzle or book always within reach. Nell possessed remarkable self-awareness, acceptance and humor. Her energetic and joyful spirit made her fun to be around.

Following retirement, Nell volunteered for many years with Loaves & Fishes and other charity efforts in East Multnomah County. A committed Christian, she was an active member of Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years and a member of the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church for the last three years. Nell was an avid gardener throughout her life; she was also an active bicyclist and cross-country skier into her mid-80s. She was always ready to try something new, welcoming the next adventure.

Nell had a wide circle of friends, including many whom she had met since moving to Mercer Island to be closer to her family in Washington. She took pride in introducing her new twin great-granddaughters to her friends. Nell spoke fluent Dutch and celebrated her Dutch heritage.

Survivors include her children, Ted Hiemstra of Seattle, Glen Hiemstra of Kirkland, Wash., Art Hiemstra of Lake Oswego, Hal Hiemstra of Washington, D.C., and Petra Sauve of Concord, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Loaves & Fishes, Cherry Blossom Center, P.O. Box 19477, Portland, 97219-0477.
