Jessie Ellen Van Horn Mindel passed away August 17, 2004. She was a grand lady, always gracious and kind. Her spirit was sweet and benevolent. Her mind was busy thinking of kindnesses for others. She was born January 19, 1916, at the family homestead in Iowa Park, Texas, to Jess and Charlotte Ellen Van Horn, a pioneer family of North Texas.
Jessie grew up a cowgirl and had her own brand: VH. She graduated Valedictorian from high school and continued her studies at Texas Christian University. At TCU she played on the girls basketball team and excelled in academics, graduating with highest honors — Summa Cum Laude. While at TCU, Jessie met the love of her life, Wilbur Jay Mindel. Their marriage on May 30, 1940, began a lifelong partnership of love, encouragement and success.
Together, the Mindels served five Disciples of Christ churches in Texas, with 23 years in Odessa. Jessie was as beloved as Wilbur in the communities they served. She sang in the First Christian Church Choir for 52 years, taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and served in the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was always respected and known for her high-quality lessons and devotionals.
Jessie was competitive and loved games of all kinds, from bridge to Yahtzee. She loved to travel and visited every U.S. state but always preferred Hawaii, Colorado and Texas. She traveled abroad through Europe and the Middle East.
Jessie was past President of the Odessa Mother's Club, member of Knife and Fork Club, supporter of the Odessa Symphony, Permian Basin Rehab and Presidential Museum. She lived her life with vim and vigor. Her high intelligence led her to be inquisitive, industrious and inventive. She could oil paint, make pots on a wheel, build a stone terrace and stretch a barbed-wire fence.
She is survived by her children, Jeanene Mindel Taylor and husband, Dr. Bobby Taylor and Dr. David Mindel and wife, Ruth Ann, all of Odessa, and Wilbur Jess Mindel and wife, Caron, of Covington, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Kelly Montgomery, Julie Tambur, Dallas Pender, Katharine Mindel and Elizabeth Mindel; and five great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Lois Leslie of Iowa Park and Evelyn Jennings of Sweetwater, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews will miss this fun and courageous lady.
A Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 19, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Odessa. Dr. Tommy Potter, Senior Minister of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Midland, will officiate. A nursery will be provided for children five and under. Services by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
