Vannah Elliot was named after two close friends of his father, Dr. William Law Van Horn, both doctors: a Dr. Vannah and a Dr. Elliott, according to a story told to me by my great Aunt Elizabeth Tanzik-Van Horn. These two doctors set up a scholarship fund for the Van Horn children to go to medical school at Tulane University after the sudden and unexpected death of their father in 1895.

Vannah E. Van Horn Dies in Mexico City
Vannah E. Van Horn, 43, of 3612 Broadway, a resident of San Antonio for 28 years, died in Mexico City while on a visit to that city.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday April 5, 1942, the Rev. Everett Jones officiated.
Internment was in New Orleans at Lafayette Cemetery #1.
Van Horn was a native of Columbia, Caldwell Parish, Louisiana. He was a retired druggist and a member of the Episcopal church.
His survivors at his death were his widow, Mrs. Edna Drake Van Horn; his mother, Mrs. Mattie Parry Mallory-Van Horn Corpus Christi, Texas; a son, Vannah Elliott Van Horn Jr. San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Oliver Herbert and Willie Law Van Horn both of Corpus Christi, Texas; and two sisters, Mrs. George W. Lamb and Mrs. Ravenel Capron of Long Island, N.Y.
