Barnard "Bud" E Van Horn of Loveland passed away Saturday, January 26, at his home surrounded by family. He was 87.
Bud was born on January 23, 1926, in Akron, Colorado, to Barnard and Laura Van Horn.
He had one brother, Kenneth, who preceded him in death. The family moved to Denver shortly after Bud was born. He graduated from North High School in Denver and attended the University of Denver.
Bud proudly served in WWII in the Army Air Corps.
After the war he married Carolyn Ruby Demmer ("Sam") on August 10, 1947, in Denver. Sam died in 2008. The couple, who were married for 61 years, had 3 children: Gary, Carol and Laurie. Bud loved to tell the story that Gary was in college when Laurie was born, and that he and Sam had children in the 40s, 50s and 60s.
Bud began his career at J.C. Penny in Denver and then because of health reasons became a bricklayer to spend his working time outside. He worked for Hensel Phelps Construction Company for more than 30 years, where he eventually became a superintendent. He was responsible for large jobs around the country including many in the mountains of Colorado.
Bud was a member of the Loveland Elks Club and Mount Olive Lutheran Church. He was baptized at the church when he was 75 years old.
Bud is survived by his 3 children – Gary and wife Renee of Estes Park; Carol Wells of Red Feather Lakes; and Laurie and husband Jeffrey Rock of Loveland. He had 7 grandchildren: Chris and wife Stacey, and Carrie Wells; and Chelsea, Jill, Chase, Luke and Peter Van Horn.
He was preceded in death by grandson Chase Van Horn. Bud also had 3 great grandchildren.
