William was the son of John Stewart and Sevilla Elizabeth (Davidson) Van Horn (or Vanhorn). The family moved to Hamilton County, Illinois in 1884.

He joined the Blooming Grove church in 1889. At the time J. C. Elliott was the pastor.

William married Pearl Derrickson (or Dirickson) during December 1902. They were the parents on one son, William Karl.

He was survived by his wife, son, mother, three brothers and one sister.

The funeral was on 7 March 1906 at the Baptist church with Reverend J. C. Elliot officiating. His body was laid to rest at the Odd Fellows cemetery.
