Alice Ann Klein was born on December 18, 1921, three miles west of Pella, Iowa. She was the first of seven children that were born to Gradus A. and Anna Vanden Berg Klein.

Alice began her elementary education at the Silver Grove Country Grade School west of Pella and graduated from the 8th grade at Pleasantville, Iowa in 1936. She then continued to live at home with her parents and being the oldest child assisted her parents with raising their family.

As a young girl, Alice met Harold Cyrus Van Essen at a Farmers Union Picnic in Pella. They were united in marriage on March 3, 1943, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. To this union eight children were born: Larry Lee, Lorraine June, Loren Arden, Aleatha Kay, Harris Allen, Ronald Eugene, Stanley Gene and Lucinda Lynn. Alice and Harold farmed together all their married life.

The first year they lived near Fifield (Dutchman's Landing) and then lived near Given until 1948. They then moved near Leighton and Olivet, Iowa where they lived until moving southwest of Tracy, Iowa in 1950. They continued to live there the remainder of their married life. Harold enjoyed farming and never retired but for the last three years of his life was ably cared for by Alice.

He passed away at their farm home on November 8, 1989 at the age of 69 years.

Alice, a devoted homemaker, continued living on the farm and enjoyed their family gatherings. Alice enjoyed embroidering pillow cases and making quilts for her children and grandchildren. She liked plants and flowers, had a large garden and canned a lot of fruits and vegetables. She especially enjoyed corresponding with her sister-in-law and friend, Ruth (Van Essen) Barnes. Pictures were important to her. She spent many hours copying and labeling almost all of her pictures for each of her eight children.

On Saturday noon, March 1, 2008, she passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 2 months and 13 days. Her family of 8 children, Larry Van Essen of Oskaloosa, Lorraine and John W. Phillips of Pleasantville, Loren and Susan Van Essen of Johnston, Aleatha and John Huff of Harvey, Harris and June Van Essen of Tracy, Ronald and Twyla Van Essen of Tracy, Stan and Kris Van Essen of Des Moines and Lucinda and Keith Luko of Knoxville, 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren were truly blessed to have such a special mother and grandmother.
