Section: Obituaries

Douglas Jay VanDyken, 47, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 28, 2009. Doug died early Sunday afternoon in a tragic accident while driving a commercial flatbed truck east on I-90 seven miles south of Sheridan, Wyo.

Doug was born on Oct. 3, 1961, to Hilco and Nell VanDyken. He attended Manhattan Christian School, graduating in 1979, then attended Helena Vo-Tech from 1979 to 1981. Later, Doug earned an associate degree in business management in 1987.

Doug proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years, 1981-1984. Part of his tour of duty included service as a chaplain's assistant. After his honorable discharge in 1984, he began a career with Kinney Shoe Stores in Oregon and Idaho, rising to the level of store manager by 1989. Many people in Gallatin County know Doug from his 17 years of employment as a sales associate with Simkins-Hallin Lumber Co., 1990-2007. For the past two years, he has been working for Morton Buildings, Inc.

Loving the outdoors, Doug enjoyed hunting. He was an avid golfer, bowler and skier. He loved basketball and served as a referee at many area games. But, more importantly, Doug cherished spending time with his family and playing games together.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hilco VanDyken.

A graveside service with military honors will be held for family and close friends at 10 a.m. Friday, July 3, at Churchill Cemetery. A memorial service to which all are invited will be held at 11 a.m. at Bethel Christian Reformed Church.

The family requests that memorial gifts honoring Doug be sent to Gallatin County Love INC.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.
