Mildred A. Smith, 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at Countryside Care Centre in Aurora. She was born on February 24, 1922 in Dixon, Illinois, the oldest child of the late Roy and Erma (Wooldridge) Van Deventer. She was raised in Aurora and graduated from Aurora East High School in 1940. She married Robert "Terry" Smith on July 10, 1945. Prior to starting her family, she worked at Austin-Western Company in Aurora. In 1957 she and Terry moved to the home they themselves built in Oswego, where they resided for the next 52 years. Although Millie was stricken with multiple sclerosis in the late '50s, she moved through life with determination and grace. She had many friends of all ages and greatly appreciated everything everyone did for her. She was a loving wife and mother. For many years she was accomplished at sewing, knitting, cross stitch, and other crafts. After Terry's retirement, they traveled extensively throughout the eastern United States and frequently visited their daughter and her family in New Hampshire. In later years when her physical health worsened, she became an avid reader, a passion she shared with her daughter and several friends. She took pride in the fact that she read 571 books in the last 15 years of her life. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Virgil, and sister, Hazel. She is survived by her husband, Terry; her daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Smith (Glen Yergeau); her four grandchildren, Nicole, Cassandra, Spencer, and Cameron Yergeau, all of New Hampshire; as well as one nephew and four nieces. The family is extremely grateful to Provena Hospice for all its love, comfort, and care in the twilight of Millie's life. Arrangements made by Dieterle Memorial Home. Private interment will be at Oswego Cemetery.
