SALEM - Van peacefully slipped away the morning of October 1, 2012. He was born in Kansas and moved to Salem when he was 2 years of age. He lived in Salem his entire life except for his time in the service. Van was a fighter pilot in WWII and flew 90 plus missions in P-51 Mustangs, British Spitfires, and P-38's. He was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Unit Badge air medal with 8 Oak Leaf Clusters, European African Middle Eastern service medal with 4 Bronze Stars. After his discharge he continued to serve in USAF reserves and became a Lt. Colonel before his retirement in 1969. Van also worked for the Veterans Administration for 30 plus years in Salem. Van was an active private pilot, golfer and a true gentleman. He was married to Lorraine T. Van Ausdell for 55 years. She passed away in 2004. Van's only brother Robert was killed in an airplane accident in 1995. Van is survived by his niece Connie Corbeil (Shawn), nephews Bob Van Ausdell Jr., Tom Van Ausdell (Terri) and Eric Page and family. He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. Rest peacefully Van.
