Paul D. Van Allen, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Covenant Health Care – Cooper in Saginaw, following a brief illness. He was born on March 29, 1925 in Bay City, the son of the late Charles and Pern (Bradley) Van Allen. Paul was a 1943 graduate of Caro High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. Paul married the former Dorothy Schweigert on June 29, 1946 at the Caro Nazarene Church. She preceded him in death on August 30, 2007. He was employed at the Caro Regional Center in the power house for nearly twenty-five years, retiring in the early 1970's, and went to work at Michigan Employment Security Commission for the next few years. Paul was a member of the Ellington Church of the Nazarene and was active with the Gideons for eight years as well as the Lions Club. He enjoyed collecting coins and loved to travel.
Paul is survived by one son and his wife, Robert & Gareth Van Allen of Surprise, Arizona; two grandsons and their spouses, Robert & Jennifer Van Allen of Phoenix, Arizona and Andrew & Renee Van Allen of Surprise, Arizona; one sister, Jessie Grady-Ostrander of Adrian; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Lee Van Allen; and one sister, Bernice Ostrander.
Funeral services were held at the Ellington Church of the Nazarene at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 9, 2011 with Rev. Ron Comfort officiating.
Cremation will follow the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Gideons. The family was assisted with these arrangements by the Ransford Collon Funeral Home of Caro.
