Virginia (Valverde) Upwall was the daughter to the late Ben and Lillie Valverde in Sonora, members of a pioneer Sonora family. She enjoyed fashion and working at Sanford's Dress Shop in Sonora and was a fashion representative.
She retired after 23 years as a deputy clerk with the Tuolumne County Clerk-Auditor's office She was known by her co-workers as "Uppie" and "Babe."
She took care of her sister, Myrtle Wilson, and her husband.
She enjoyed holiday gatherings with her family, spending time with her children, cooking and making candy.
She was a member of the Amaranth, Delta Queen Court, in Lodi, and Order of the Eastern Star Lodi Chapter No. 150 and the Tuolumne Chapter. She served as life member, supreme officer and past president of the Sonora Emblem Club and was past president of the Soroptimist International of Sonora, and the Sonora Business and Professional Women. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Sonora, and served as a leader for numerous clubs and organizations in Sonora.
She is survived by her son, Leonard "Sonny" Upwall, of Sonora; a daughter, Donna Lewis-Roys, of Lodi; grandchildren and their spouses, Brian and Anna Lewis, Paula and Bruce Quigley, Mike and Cindy Upwall, and Debbie and Mark Newman; great-grandchildren, Kristi Lewis, Kyle Upwall, Drew Newman, Deric and Molly Quigley, and Katie and Blane Newman; nieces, Dolores Mitchell, of Altaville, Aileen Johnston, of Sonora, and Geraldine Adams, of Modesto; and numerous grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Mickey Upwall, and second husband, Herbert Larson; a sister, Myrtle Wilson; and brothers Harold and Herman Valverde.
