Christina G. Valdéz, age 89, a lifetime resident of Las Vegas, NM, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014.
Christina was born on April 16, 1925 in Las Vegas, NM to the late Evaristo and Magdalena Gallegos.
Shortly thereafter moved to Santa Rosa, NM where she attended public school and graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1943. While attending New Mexico Highlands University she met her husband of 54 years, Joe P. Valdéz who at the time was a Military Instructor at Fort Myers, Florida and at Camp Luna in Las Vegas, New Mexico. They were married on July 14, 1944.
Christina worked for many years at the First National Bank in Las Vegas, NM and later transferred to the bank in Las Cruces, NM and the bank in Gallup, NM. Christina also enjoyed a brief career with the Department of Human Services in McKinley County where she had an opportunity to work with disadvantaged families and was proud that she was able to assist families who were less fortunate.
Christina enjoyed taking pictures of all her family and always insisted that anyone not leave home without their cameras. Christina also enjoyed shopping and cooking for her entire family and would not allow anyone to leave her home without enjoying a meal.
Christina will be remembered as a loving, generous and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was instrumental to her entire family in sharing her faith and devotion to the Catholic Church.
Christina was a Roman Catholic and a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Las Vegas, NM.
Christina Valdéz was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe. P. Valdéz, her parents, Evaristo and Magdalena Gallegos, an infant son, Joseph Valdéz, son, Paul Valdéz, granddaughter, Elizabeth Dawson, brother, Evaristo Gallegos Jr. and sister, Mary Sánchez.
Christina is survived by daughters, Vera Luján and her husband, José and Mary Romero all of Las Vegas, NM, brother, Arthur Gallegos and his wife, Esther, sister-in-law, Magdalena Gallegos of Santa Rosa, daughter-in-law, Barbara Atkinson of Mesa, AZ, grandchildren, Edith Trujillo, Etta Bustos and her husband, Don, Christina Sena and her husband, Peter, Joseph Luján and his wife, Anna, James Valdéz, Janea Varela and her husband, Bobby, Justina Begay and Andrea Gabaldón and her husband, Ryan and thirty great-great-grandchildren.
Rosary services will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Las Vegas, NM, with funeral services following the rosary with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Peter Sena Jr., Miguel Sena, David Trujillo, James Valdéz, Paul Valdéz and Dennis Gallegos. Cremation will follow after mass and burial of cremains will be held at a later date at Santa Fé National Cemetery in Santa Fé, NM.
