Sheila Anne Urban Ryland, age 74, passed away on March 4, 2011 in Richmond, Virginia. She was born in Ashland, Ohio, on July 19, 1936, the daughter of Hilda Maude Gallaway Urban and Amos Urban, who preceded her in death.

She graduated from Ashland High School in 1954 and from Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing, in Cleveland Ohio, in 1957. She was married to Robert R. Ryland and they resided in Abingdon, Virginia for forty years, recently moving to Heritage Oaks Retirement Community in Richmond, Virginia.

Sheila spent her life caring for the sick and retired after 24 years of service at Johnston Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse. She was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, the Sanctuary Choir, the Carrie Gillespie Circle, and the Wesley Bible Class. She served many years on the Board of Directors of the Abingdon Senior Services. She was a member of the Booklovers Club and years ago, served as president of the Newcomers Club. She volunteered at the Crossroads Medical Mission and at the Arts Depot.

She is survived by her husband, Robert R. Ryland and three daughters and sons-in-law: Laura Kim Ryland Polk and husband Tim Polk of Nashville, TN; Amy Susan Ryland Westmoreland and husband James Westmoreland of Pearisburg, VA; and Jill Elaine Ryland Harris and husband Bryan Harris of Richmond, VA. Grandchildren: Jeremy Michael Kaylor, Jonathan Robert Kaylor, Emily Ryland Cook, Katie Nichole Harris, Thomas Robert Harris, and Henry Daniel Harris. One great granddaughter: Keyera Ryman Kaylor.

The Memorial Service will be held at the Abingdon United Methodist Church at 4:00 pm, Sunday, March 6, with visitation prior to the service from 2:00 – 3:45. Burial will be held at Forest Hills Memory Gardens for the immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church Music Fund, 101 E. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210 or to the Crossroads Medical Mission, P.O. Box 16852, Bristol, VA 24209-6852. The Pall Bearers will be: Tim Polk, James Westmoreland, Bryan Harris, Jeremy Kaylor, Jonathan Kaylor, and Ricky Cook.
