| Birth: | May 26, 1904 Tampa Hillsborough County Florida, USA | | Death: | Sep. 7, 1991 Gainesville Alachua County Florida, USA | Ruby was born to Levi Daniel & Frieda Marie (Bolling) Eiland. Growing up the family moved all over west central Florida. Ruby graduated with the first class of Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Pasco County, Florida in 1924. She held a teaching position in 1925 in Seven Springs, Florida. The school closed the next year, and the building now houses the West Pasco Historical Society museum.
Ruby attended Asbury College in Louisville, Kentucky in 1926-27. She earned a BAE degree in 1948, and a MAE in 1950 from the University of Florida. In the 1960's Ruby earned certification in special education from the University of Florida. After 35 years of teaching in public schools, she retired in 1967. After teaching for the next two years in Lake Butler, Florida, at a Christian school, Ruby opened one of the first private schools in Gainesville, Florida. The school was open for only one year, closing due her rheumatoid arthritis condition. Teaching children to read was a real joy to her, which she continued to do for sometime, tutoring when she was able to. (bio written by Ruby's daughter, Martha Underwood Stephens)
