OBITUARY: Valetta 'Jo' Burt
Dec. 16, 1944-July 1, 2010

HEPPNER - Valetta "Jo" Burt, 65, of Heppner died Thursday, July 1, 2010, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner. A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8 at Beulah Cemetery in Troy, Idaho. A memorial service will be held in Heppner at a later date.

Mrs. Burt was born Dec. 16, 1944, in Pendleton to Charles and Ruby Humphreys Umbarger. At age three she moved with her family from Pilot Rock to Troy, Idaho, where she was raised and attended school, graduating in 1963. She then attended Links Business School in Boise, Idaho. After graduation from Links she worked for the R.O.T.C. at the University of Idaho. In 1970 she went to work for First Security Bank in St. Marys, Idaho.

In 1970 she married Alfred B. Burt at Moscow, Idaho. The couple moved to Montana in 1974, where she collected fire weather data for the U.S. Forest Service. In 1978 they moved to Gold Beach, and then to Heppner in 1979.

In 1980 she started a day care business, which continued until 1984 when she began working for Spicer-Kuhn Law Offices. Her employment with the Morrow County School District began at the district office and later she worked in the special education system. She retired in 2007.

Mrs. Burt is survived by her husband, Al Burt of Heppner; sons Alfred C. Burt of Chapel Hill, Tenn., Tony Burt of Portland and Andy Burt of Heppner; sister Janet O'Connor of Moscow, Idaho; brother Lael Umbarger of Reno, Nev.; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister Carolyn Kay.
