Ernst Udet
Birth: Apr. 26, 1896
Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurter Stadtkreis
Hessen, Germany
Death: Nov. 17, 1941
Berlin, Germany

World War I German Flying Ace. One of the most charismatic characters of World War I, he was the second highest scoring and highest surviving German ace with a score of 62 kills. He flew with Manfred von Richthofen and was a squadron commander as well as being awarded the Pour le Merite (Germany's highest military award). After the war he was involved with aircraft production, performed barnstorming/stunt flying all over the world, flew as a stunt pilot in Hollywood movies, and was a test pilot. Udet joined the Luftwaffe during WWII and eventually attained the rank of Generaloberst. Udet fell out of favor with Goering and also could not cope with the political in-fighting. Udet died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a Berlin hotel. Udet predicted before his death that the Nazis would report he died of a heart attack when actually the Nazis claimed Udet died during test flying a new aircraft.
