Richie Verna Turpin Adams was born on January 24, 1924 in Clanton, Alabama to the late Richard and Fannie Turpin.

She was educated in the public schools of Chilton County, Alabams. As the next step in her education, she graduated from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree n Business Education. She did further study at the Uniersity of Georgia earning a Master of Education degree in Administration.

In 1948, she married Avan T Adams, Sr and they moved to Quitman. Two sons were born to this union and the couple became a fixture in the community. Mrs. Adams taught in the Brooks County School System from 1949 through 1986.

In this capacity, she founded the Distributive Education Department for Brooks County School and taught business courses.

After retirement, she remained involved with the education of the Brooks County students by serving as a member of the Brook County Board of Education.

Mrs Adams was an active member of Bethel A.M.E. Church for more than sixty years.

To her students, Mrs Adams was a strong woman of conviction who was strict, but she tempered all with love and caring. She stood her ground for their benefit in every way. Whether you knew her as Mrs Adams, R. T., Verna, or Grandma Richie, remember her as a strong woman of value, a staunch advocate for her students, her colleagues, and as a child of God.

After living a full and successful life, Mrs Adams died peacefully on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Brooks County Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Avan, her older son Darryl, her only grandson Darryl Teonn and her 3 sisters; Maudry Williams, Warrena Turpin and Genevieve Finley.

She is survived by her loving son, seven granddaughters, six great-grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren; her only niece, two great nieces, one great nephew as well as other relatives

Memorial services were held on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church with Rev L William Webb, officiating.
