Elizabeth Gertrude Turnage was the daughter of John William Turnage and his wife Emma Eliza Briley of Pitt County, NC. She was a telephone operator in Greenville, NC when she met Wilmot Brown who was a railroad clerk in Hamlet, NC. On 11 Dec 1920 she became the bride of Wilmot Brown in Greenville, NC. They returned to Hamlet, NC where they raised five children, Elizabeth Tilghman, Wilmot Jr, Thomas A, Emily Lois Pearce and Pat Gibson Johnson.
"Gertrude was a firm but loving mother. She was active in the TEL SS class at First Baptist Church, Hamlet, NC. She had economic ability which grew out of raising five children during the years of the depresssion with a husband who was out of work for 2 yrs."
