Sports figure. Called the 'father of golf in the Southland', he was a nationally known sportsman. Affectionately called Uncle Ed by thousands of golfers, he was responsible for founding the first golf club in Southern California when the game was played with tomato cans for clubs in a vacant lot on 16th Street. At the time of his death, he was president of a sporting goods store, a business started with his father and brother-in-law. For 22 years, he was President of the Southern California Golf Association, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He was a founder of the Los Angeles Country Club. When the club was first at Pico & Western, his experiments on a sand course resulted in Southern California golf courses having grass turfs, believed an impossibility prior to then. He was also a charter member of the prestigious Jonathan Club and is credited with being the person who suggested the name of the club. He suffered a stroke while playing golf at the Los Angeles Country Club and died 2 days later. So beloved by members, he was laid out in the club's drawing room. His funeral was held there and attended by hundreds. (biography by Bernard Johnson FAG# 575).
