Mrs. Bithiah R., wife of Caleb L. Barton, of Croydon, passed quietly to the other shore on Sunday last, July 13.
Her maiden name was Bithiah R. Tuck. She was born in Manchester, Mass., Jan. 13, 1813. Her father was Capt. Samuel Tuck, who commanded one of "Billy" Gray's merchant vessels 20 years; & her grandfather was Dr. Samuel Tuck, who made a reputation as a physician in "Manchester by the sea" that continued many years after his death.
She was educated in the schools of her native town & at the Nashua, N.H. Academy, & began teaching when 14 years of age. She pursued her vocation as a teacher with much success on Nantucket Island & Cape Dod, Nashua & Hopkinton in this state & other places. During many years she was a frequent contributor to the press, & her articles on religious & other topics received numerous ecomiums from literary critics of good standing.
In 1840, she united in marriage with Caleb L. Barton, who survives her, together with all her children- Sullivan Barton of Croydon, & Mrs. Ethan Smith & H.A. Barton of this town.
