Mrs. Martha Bliss
Mrs. Martha Bliss, widow of Stephen
Bliss, died Wednesday afternoon at 3
at the home of F.W. Jones 406 Tilden
street. Her age was 82 years. She
was a native of Northampton, England.
She had resided in this city twelve
years. She resided in Canada before
coming to the States.
She leaves three sons; Joseph Mont-
gomery of Sturgeon Bay, Canada; Ed-
win Montgomery, Buffalo; John Bliss,
Detroit and two daughters Mrs. Ida
Reed, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. W. C. Ban-
gert, Wolcott, N.Y.
Funeral arrangements not yet completed.
Martha Tubb was born to James and Ann
Bliss, was probably born in the summer
or early fall of 1835, in Catesby,
Northampton, England because a church
record of her Christening exists dated
Oct. 15, 1835.
She was first married to while still in
England to William Montgomery on April
28, 1857. There are two Montgomery sons;
Joseph Montague Tubb Montgomery who
eventually left Canada for East Tawas,
Michigan and Edwin Wesley Montgomery who
eventually resided in Buffalo, New York.
Martha and her children left England
with her future husband, Stephen Bliss
in 1871 arriving in Ontario and settled
in Nottawasaga, Simcoe Co. They married
December 2, 1872. Stephen and Martha had
one son, John and two daughters Ida Sobria
Martha was widowed Dec. 12, 1903 when
Stephen succumbed to complications related
to "prostatic disease" while being cared
for at Beeton/Tecumseth House of Refuge,
Beeton, Tecumseth, Ontario. There is a
cemetery at this former "old age infirmary,"
and Stephen Bliss is interred there on the
groundsof the infirmary along with many
others. A plaque embossed with the names
of these unfortunate souls is mounted on a
large boulder serving as a single memorial
to their many lives.
