Mrs. Martha Bliss
Mrs. Martha Bliss, widow of Stephen
Bliss, died Wednesday afternoon at 3
at the home of F.W. Jones 406 Tilden
street. Her age was 82 years. She
was a native of Northampton, England.
She had resided in this city twelve
years. She resided in Canada before
coming to the States.
She leaves three sons; Joseph Mont-
gomery of Sturgeon Bay, Canada; Ed-
win Montgomery, Buffalo; John Bliss,
Detroit and two daughters Mrs. Ida
Reed, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. W. C. Ban-
gert, Wolcott, N.Y.
Funeral arrangements not yet completed.
Martha Tubb, born to James and
Elizabeth Ann Cleaver Tubb, was
probably born in the summer or
early fall of 1835, in Catesby,
Northampton, England because a
church record of her Christening
exists dated Oct. 15, 1835.
She was first married, while still
in England, to William Montgomery on
April 28, 1857. There are two Montgomery
sons; Joseph Montague Tubb Montgomery
who eventually left Canada for East
Tawas, Michigan and Edwin Wesley
Montgomery whoeventually resided in
Buffalo, New York.
Martha and her children left England
with her future husband, Stephen Bliss
aboard the "Nova Scotian" arriving Quebec
on October 14, 1869. By 1871 they had
traveled to Ontario and settled in
Nottawasaga, Simcoe Co.
Stephen and Martha married December 2,
1872 and had one son, John and two
daughters Ida Sobria and Irena Sophia.
Martha was widowed Dec. 12, 1903 when
Stephen succumbed to complications related
to "prostatic disease" while being cared
for at Beeton/Tecumseth House of Refuge,
Beeton, Tecumseth, Ontario. There is a
cemetery at this former "old age infirmary,"
and Stephen Bliss is interred there on the
grounds of the infirmary along with many
others. A plaque embossed with the names
of these unfortunate souls is mounted on a
large boulder serving as a single memorial
to their many lives.
