Brunswick-- Verdi L. Tripp, 66, of Weymouth Street, died peacefully as he lived, Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at his home.

He was born in Sanford, September 6, 1940, a son of Lester H. and Lenore B. McFarland Tripp. He graduated from South Portland High School in 1959.

He married Margaret F. Barnes in South Portland, May 13, 1961. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1966.

After returning to Maine, he lived briefly in Biddeford before moving to Brunswick in 1967. Mr. Tripp was News and Sports Bureau Chief for Guy Gannett Publishing Company at its Maine Sunday Telegram and Portland Press Herald office in Brunswick from 1967 to 1985. He was a former co-owner and marketing manager for three newspapers and was the Publisher of the Topsham Cryer since 1985.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Brunswick.

He was a Past Chair of the Topsham Board of Selectman, and served as President of the Brunswick Area Chamber of Commerce in 1990. He was honored as Citizen of the Year in 2005. He was active in the development of the Topsham Fair Mall and co-chaired the committee that planned and proposed the Coastal Connector from Brunswick to Topsham. He was Past Chair and member of Maine Vocational Region 10, Past Chair of the Capital Fund-raising Campaign at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Past Co-Chair of the Topsham Business Association and Editor for 55 Plus Center monthly newsletter. He was past president of the Respite Care Program of Brunswick.

Mr. Tripp was Past President and Life Member of the Topsham Jaycees, a member of United Lodge of Masons in Brunswick and Kora Temple Shrine. He was a member of the Brunswick Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Tripp served in the Maine Legislature from 1995 to 2000, representing District 52, Topsham.

He is survived by his wife of Brunswick; a son, Albert L. Tripp of Durham and his companion, Susan Davis; a daughter, Amy E. Tripp of Brunswick; two sisters, Donna Wong of South Portland and Becky White of E. Lebanon; three brothers, Rockett Wong of Portland and his wife, Lily, Daniel Wong of North Yarmouth and his wife, Teresa, and Larry Tripp of Newfield and his wife, Joyce; two grandsons, Mark D. Tripp and Jeremy R. Tripp, and many nieces and nephews.
