James & Martha owned slaves and were considered "planters". James was a doctor, as were two of his sons, Bailey and Theophilus. James and Martha both died about 1860, and their younger children returned to TN to live with relatives there. They were under the legal guardianship of James Motley in Wilson Co., TN. Their residences included Tipton Co., TN and Lafayette Co., AR. They first made their home in Tennessee, and their older children were born there. In 1833, they were in Lafayette Co., Arkansas. By 1840, they were living in Rush Island, Caddo Parrish, Louisiana. Caddo Parrish History lists Dr. James Peace among its earliest settlers. Caddo Parrish was organized in 1839, and was one of the wealthiest in the state. It was settled by "planters" who had brought their slaves with them from the older states. He died in 1860 in Caddo Parrish, Louisiana. Martha died about the same time. The younger children were sent to Tennessee to live with their aunt and uncle, and were under the legal guardianship of Joseph Motley.
