Birth: Jun. 14, 1848
Wake County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Apr. 3, 1931
Wake County
North Carolina, USA

Gertrude Haywood was born 1848 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC the 7th of 9 known surviving children (3 boys/6 girls) born to the Hon. William Henry Haywood III and his wife, Jane Graham. She was twin to her sister, Margaret Nelson Haywood.

She was the paternal grandchild of William Henry Haywood II & Ann Sheppard of Raleigh; and gr-grandchild of William Henry Haywood I & Charity Hare of Edgecombe Co, NC. She was the maternal grandchild of Edward Graham of New Bern, Craven Co, NC.

Gertrude was just 4 years old when her father died in 1852. She weathered the Civil War remaining in Raleigh with her widowed mother who would be left grieving after the loss of 2 of her 3 sons in the war.

Gertrude married into the prominent Trapier family of Charleston & Georgetown, South Carolina, marrying two of the sons of Rev. Richard Shubrick Trapier & Windham/Wyndham Theodosia. It is not clear which of the sons she married first. Some sources cite it was William Shubrick Trapier (1850-bef 1880), while other sources cite her first husband was Richard Shubrick Trapier(1842-before 1880).

It is certain and confirmed that in 1881 she married (2nd) to Edward Shubrick Trapier (1840-1909), the eldest of Rev. Trapier's 6 sons, and the father of her 4 known children: Wyndham Theodosia Trapier (1881-1967), Margaret "Maggie" Haywood Trapier (1883), Jennie Trapier (1884), and Elizabeth "Bessie" Trapier (1886).

Edward S. Trapier worked for the railroad and the couple resided in Raleigh where they raised their children. Gertrude was widowed in 1909 when her husband of 28 years passed at age 69. She never remarried and survived him 22 years, passing in 1931 at age 83.

Neither of her husbands is buried in Oakwood, and their final resting place has not been found by this researcher. Many of the Trapier family is buried in Prince George Winyah Cemetery, in Georgetown, SC, and it is possible they are there as well.

As for her children, it is known the eldest daughter Wyndham married Samuel A'Court Ashe, Jr. of Raleigh, who is buried in Oakwood. Wyndham reportedly died in St. Simons Island, GA in 1967, but her burial place has not been located by this researcher. Bessie Trapier married Floyd Mott of Raliegh, and died sometime after 1920. It is not known what became of her other 2 children.
