AGE: 78 NORTH BRUNSWICK

Bertha Toy Buchanon, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at RWJUH, New Brunswick.

Born in Boyle, Miss., she lived in Gary, Ind., Chicago, Ill., New Brunswick since 1968, and Hampton, Va. before moving to North Brunswick.

She was employed at E.R. Squibb & Son, New Brunswick, retiring in 1994.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, Somerset, member of the Security, Hospitality, and Kitchen ministries; former member of the Senior Choir #2; and other ministries; Board Director of the Betty L. Hodges Community Girls Club; former member of the Greater New Brunswick Urban Leaque, member, former Sunbean Temple #164 IBP of E of W; Rising Sun Temple 119 - Princeton; founding member and first president of 2nd Ward Block Club of New Brunswick; founding member and first president of Women On The Move For Christ Ministry at Trinity Baptist Church, Newport News, Va.; and one of the founding members of Julius K. Nyerere Education Institute, New Brunswick.

She was predeceased by her parents, Willie and Georgia Toy; and brothers, Clifford Toy, Grant McClendon, and J W Toy.

Surviving are three children, Carrie, Robert, and Victor (Cynthia); two grandchildren, Bertha Denise Buchanon-Thompson and Manases LeRoi Buchanon; and five great-grandchildren.

The viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26 at Anderson Funeral Service, 201 Sandford St., New Brunswick. Another viewing will be from 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27 until the service at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, 771 Somerset St., Somerset. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Ward Block Club - Scholarship Fund, 123 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, NJ 08901 or the Betty L. Hodges Community Girls Club - Scholarship Fund, 408 Franklin Blvd., Somerset, NJ 08873.
