Auto Crash Fatal to Electra Youth
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p, Sunday from the Electra Methodist Church for Delmer Lee Towery, 20 year old Electran who was killed Thursday night in a collision of a Texas State Guard jeep and a car near Sand Beach swimming pool.
Rev E H Coburn, assistant pastor officiating. Pall bearers were John McLaughlin, Marvin Willis, Bruce Forbes, Elmer Gish, Steve Marchland Jr and Billy George. Internment was at Beaver Creek Cemetery.
Survivors include his parents, Mr and Mrs C E Towery, a brother, Lamar Johnson, and a grandmother, Mrs W M Guthrie.
Delmer was a graduate of Electra High School. He recently received his discharge from the army air forces last winter and attended North Texas State College this spring. He was planning on enrolling again this fall. Delmer received his Civilian Pilots license from Electra Air Field. He was under the instruction of Ish Brown.
Others in the jeep were June Stone, Peggy Moran, Wilma Joy Koger, Dena Andrews, Billy George, John McLaughlin, Bruce Forbes and Stephen Marchland Jr, the driver of the jeep. All were from Electra. None of the other passengers suffered serious injuries, but Miss June Stone was confined to her home with a head injury and a bruised hip.
Capt Wells said that the jeep apparently tried to pass a car head in the same direction. R B Thornburn, 2110 Tenth, Witchita Falls, was the drive of the car. The jeep hit the left rear fender of Thornburn's car and careened across the four lane highway. The rear fender was torn from Thornburn's car, but neither Thornburn or Miss Ethyl Cobb, riding with him, were injured. The right front fender of the jeep was demolished and the windshield and hood were damaged.
Stephen E Marchland Jr was charged with negligent Homicide. Marchalnd was driving the jeep which was carrying nine persons when it everturned [overturned] following the collision. The complaint signed by Capt E M Wells of the Texas Highway Patrol was filed by the County attorney Woodward Bass in county court. Marchland made one thousand dollar bond.
Towery was thrown from the front seat of the jeep and apparently landed on his head 25 feet away, dying instantly, Wells said after investigating the accident. Towery was taken to Wichita General Hospital in an Owens and Brumley ambulance where he was pronounced dead.
