QUIMBY, Iowa -- Dorothy E. Conley, 95, of Quimby passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.

Services were Saturday at Quimby United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rick Layman officiating. Burial was in Quimby Cemetery.

Dorothy Edith Conley, the daughter of George and Nellie (Markusen) Totman, was born Nov. 26, 1913, in Quimby, Iowa, and lived her whole life there. Her elementary and high school years were in Quimby, and she graduated valedictorian in 1930. Dorothy attended Cherokee Junior College and Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. She taught five years in Cherokee County rural schools and 37 years in Quimby Community School. In 1960, Dorothy was selected as a delegate to the National Education Association Convention in Los Angeles, Calif. She had taught three generations in some families. She retired from teaching in 1978 and was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Kenneth (Allen) Conley on Nov. 11, 1934, and they had two sons, Thomas Allen and David Joe Conley. Since February of 2009, Dorothy had been a resident of St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer. Iowa.

She was a lifelong member of Quimby United Methodist Church, being active in Sunday school, Choir, United Methodist Women and Ruth Circle. For several years, Dorothy directed the live dramatization of the Last Supper presented by the Quimby Methodist Men. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang for many funerals and weddings.

Dorothy helped write the pageant material for the Quimby Jubilee in 1962. She was named Queen of Quimby's Centennial Celebration in 1987 and was the piano player for the Ladies Kitchen Bank. In 1989, Dorothy was the commencement speaker for the graduating seniors. She had been their kindergarten teacher.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters-in-law; Lorraine Conley of Spencer, Iowa, and Marna Conley of Syracuse, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Kelly (David) Tellinghuisen, Michael (Becky) Conley, Ann (Neal) Williamsen, Kara (Eric) Patten and Jennifer (Marc) Halko; six great-grandsons, Ryan Tellinghuisen, Tyler Conley, Scott Williamsen, Garrett and Bradley Halko and Andrew Patten; six great-granddaughters, Sara Williamsen, Laura Tellinghuisen, Maddie Conley, Katie and Jillian Halko and Margaret Patten; a great-stepgranddaughter, Jenny Patten; other relatives and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Allen in 1964; both her sons; brothers, Robert and James Totman; a sister, Mary Ewing; and two infant brothers.
