Mary Toth Ardaly had a rough life. She came from Hungary to the USA as a 14 year old, travelling with another family member, her brother, Rafael, to join her dad and other family. She supposedly married in Racine, WI, but the record has not yet been found.

Mary married young, and her husband was not kind to her. They had moved to Cook County, IL, and, sadly, they were divorced in 1931, after almost 25 years of marriage.

My memories of Grandma Mary are sweet. She was a kind, loving person who adored my husband and our kids. By the time I met her she was already senile; she spent all day, every day, in her own room, reading her Bible and counting her pennies. Retrospectively, this poor lady was protecting herself from poverty and abuse. The Bible and her money protected her from both, in her mind. She lived with us, and we tried to help protect her as best we could.

She loved to dance, and was so graceful. At family dinners, she would dress up, anxious for socialization. My dad would get her up and moving, dancing for hours. Her laugh was contagious. For an 80+ woman she sure could move!

A few years later necessity forced us to place her in a nursing home. (She had started several fires and floods while no one else was home) Her daughter, Caroline, was there every day to help care for Mary. We visited often, and Mary always remembered my husband, but now she thought he was our little son. I've got to admit, Jr was the spitting image of his dad, so poor Mary couldn't help but be confused!

Four years later, Mary died. Our daughter, the youngest, learned to walk that day. She was then fourteen months, and we were beginning to think she never would! I'm willing to bet Grandma Mary had some influence here!

We still miss Mary, and her sunny smile, but we are at peace knowing she is in the good hands of the Maker she loved so much.

God love you, Grandma Mary; we sure do!
