Pierrepont Manor, Jan. 23 —
Mrs. Nellie E. Torrey Balch, 79.
wife of Melvin W. Balch, died
Monday evening at 7:10 at her
home in Pierrepont Manor as the
result of s series of strokes since
1942.
The body was taken to the Piddock
funeral home in Adams.
Friends may call at the family
home this evening from 7 to 9.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday afternoon at 2 at Union
church, Pierrepont Manor. Rev
B. A. Walton of Camden, formerly
of Pierrepont Manor, assisted
by Rev. J Harold Douglass, pastor
of Union church, will officiate.
Burial will be in the family
plot in Maple wood cemetery,
Mannsville.
Surviving Mrs. Balch. besides
her husband, are two daughters,
Mrs. Glenn (Hilda) Bovee and
Miss Madora Balch: two sons
Carl R Balch and William Balch
of the the Manor: two grandchil
dren, Robert Bovee and Robert
Balch and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Balch. daughter of the
late Francis and Mellasa Torrey
of Pierrepont Manor, was born
Jan. 20, 1870 She was graduated
from high school with the class
of 1887 and became the bride of
Melvin William Balch Sept 26.
1888. The ceremony was solemnized
at Scriba. Rev. Charles
Walton, pastor of the Methodist
church, officiating.
The couple settled on the Balch
homestead which has been settled
by their ancestors over 128
years ago and was later purchased
by Mr. and Mrs. Balch.
In 1922 Mr. and Mrs. Balch returned
to the Manor to care for
Mrs. Batch's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Francis Torrey. Mr. and
Mrs. Balch celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary Sept.
26. 1938.
Mrs. Balch wrote poetry. She was a member of the
church at Manna villa, an honorary
member of the Ladies'
league of Union church, the Village
Improvement club, Rebekah
lodge and a golden sheaf member
of Mannsville grange.
