Col. Nicholas Tony, USAF (ret.) of Crystal River, FL, passed away on January 18, 2011.
Col. Tony was born in Bulger, PA, to the late Elizabeth Simon Tony and Albert Tony on October 15, 1919. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dayle McCurdy Tony; his sister Joan Tony Bowland; and brother Thomas Tony.
He attended school in Burgettstown, PA, and graduated from Waynesburg University in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in economics. Nick was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by Waynesburg University on June 14, 2008, as a result of his professional achievements, community service activities, and his significant leadership and service to the University. Nick enrolled in the Aviation Cadet Program at Gulfport Air Base in 1943. His military career was spent at numerous Air Force Bases both stateside and overseas. He was on assignment in Germany in 1945, Korea in 1950-52, and SHAPE Headquarters 1969-1971. He retired from the Air Force in 1971 after serving our country for 28 years. Nick and his wife, Dayle, moved to Crystal River, FL, in 1974, where he resided until his passing. They were avid golfers during their life in Florida and were members of the Seven Rivers Golf and Country Club and Old Prestwick Golf Club.
Nick is survived by the following nieces and nephews and their families: Elizabeth Scofield-Ford, West Grove, PA; Virginia Tony Slachta, Morehead City, NC; Thomas Tannous, Houston, Texas; Mary Elizabeth Slachta Lloyd, Baltimore, Maryland; Mark McCurdy, Rogersville, PA; Frankie Ann McCurdy Bonifield, and Jonna Dee McCurdy Wingard, Bethel Park, PA; Charles Hunter McCurdy, Pittsburgh, PA; Lisa Marie McCurdy of Flourtown, PA; Kathlyn McCurdy and sister-in-law Dolores Marie McCurdy of Waynesburg, PA.
A Memorial service will be held on Friday, February 18, 2011, at 11 a.m. from the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Crystal River with the Rev. Lloyd Bertine pastor of the Gulf to Lake Church in Crystal River officiating. Col. Tony will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, on March 4, 2011, at 9 a.m. with full military honors.
