|Death: ||Dec. 6, 2010|
Anthony "Tony" Thomas Silvestri, of Bellingham, WA, passed away Monday, December 6, 2010.
He was 86, born in Venice, California to Frank and Rosa (Tufano) Silvestri. Raised in Venice, California, and growing up during the Great Depression, his family survived that time fairly well due to his father being a shoe cobbler. He had a good childhood, with devoted Italian parents.
Tony served in the Army from 1942-1945. Stationed in Bougainville in the South Pacific, Tony was additionally employed by the Army Exchange Service. He was involved in the P-X (Post Exchange).
After being honorably discharged in 1945, he worked for Standard Oil for several years, and even co-owned a welding shop.
Tony was a member (journeyman shopmen) of the Ironworker's Union Local 509 for 30 years from 1957 to 1987, when he retired, still being an active member up until his death.
Tony married Grace Capito on December 28, 1957, and raised their family in Venice. After retiring in 1987, Grace and Tony moved to Bellingham, where they moved into their beautiful home on Queen St. They shared many dinners there with family and friends, and loved entertaining.
Shortly after moving to Bellingham, Tony co-founded the local Italian-American club and its charter member. Tony was extremely proud of his Italian heritage, and loved spending time with his family and friends.
An avid fisherman, he loved opening day! He also enjoyed hunting with family in his younger days.
Tony and Grace moved to Merrill Gardens several years back, and Tony truly enjoyed living there. Having developed MANY friends, he loved playing games there. Tony was part of the winning team of the Wii Bowling Tournament 2 years in a row. Whether it was Bingo, Skip-bo, Rummy-Kub or pool, he was slightly competitive and enjoyed every second of playing!!
Tony was a proud member of The Assumption Church, of which he volunteered and was an active member, including the Rosary Makers. Tony was blessed with countless friends, and had the faith to get him through to be with Grace again.
Tony was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; brother, Rudy; and his parents.
He is survived by his son, Dennis (Melinda) Silvestri; daughter, Janice (Chuck) Palomino; stepsons, Ralph (Robin Kagin) Smallwood and Rick (Julie) Smallwood; 5 grandchildren, Laurie, Shannon, Dylan, Diane and David; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Pat (Helen) Silvestri; sister, Elizabeth (George) Ricci; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A special Thank You to Larry and Marilee Wilcox. "Once in a lifetime you meet a person like Tony, and you can call him a friend". ~Larry Wilcox. Dad, Brother, Uncle, Grandpa, Friend, you will always be in our hearts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the Church of the Assumption.
