Clifford Tolbert

It was a long and fruitful life, 95 years, one month and 16 days to be exact. He would see 17 presidents, world wars, and on a more personal level leave behind 60 direct descendants. And so, the life of Clifford Tolbert ended on Tuesday, the 1st day of April 2014. He was ready to go, he longed for it, for he was very tired. We his family were honored to share so many years with him. Our Dad and Grandpa now goes to that great hunting camp in the sky to see the fisher of men, his Lord and Savior.

The middle child, the 4th of seven children, Clifford Glenn Tolbert was born on Feb. 16th, 1919, at Stover's Fork. He was the son of James Scott and Lucinda Pearl Davis Tolbert. His brothers, Paul, Gail, Clyde and Talford, and a sister, Lucy Frances Cornett, have preceded him in death. His sister Jewell Zutatu survives, as well as two sisters-in-law, Thelma and Marion Tolbert. There is a large extended family of nieces and nephews.

Clifford spent his childhood at Oak Grove. Seventy-two years ago at the age of 23, Clifford gave his life to the Lord at the Oak Grove Christian Church. A dedicated member, a Deacon, he attended faithfully up to the last days of his life. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."

He was a hard worker all his life. Clifford worked at many jobs to support his family. He was a salesman at Raleigh Motor Sales used car lot for over 30 years.

Clifford loved to hunt and fish. He was one of the original members of the Dilley Run Hunting Club in Greenbrier County where he spent many wonderful days. Clifford loved to garden and immensely enjoyed family gatherings. He was a great story teller. We his family shall miss his "Big Yarns."

On March 14th, 1939, Clifford married Gertrude Cook. Clifford and Gertrude were blessed with six children. Glenn Tolbert and his wife Gurtha of Hanna, WY, Phyllis Jenkins and her husband, Larry, of Durham, NC, James Tolbert and his wife, Linda, of Oak Grove, Curtis Tolbert and his wife, Lisa, of Douglas, WY, Patty Metrick of Oak Grove and Susan Hancock and her husband, Billy, of Beckley. They were the proud grandparents of 19 grandchildren. In the years that have passed, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild have came into the Tolbert family.

On Dec. 4th, 1999, after 60 years of marriage, Clifford and Gertrude were involved in a tragic car accident that claimed Gertrude's life. But Clifford and his family held close and life would go on.

The casualty of a long life is that one outlives so many loved ones and friends. Clifford endured that experience more than once. Most recently, his son-in-law, Larry Metrick, died in October of last year. He was deeply saddened by his passing.

But Clifford stayed with the times and has many friends. Among them was Ruby Burleson, who became his best friend and companion after Gertrude's passing.

In his final days Clifford was so very gracious about dying. His children marveled at his stamina and strength to endure his suffering without complaint.

And so he was blessed with many years, many experiences, a large and loving family and a deep, abiding faith.

On Saturday morning, April 5th, at 11 a.m. there will be a Homegoing Service for Clifford Glenn Tolbert at the Oak Grove Christian Church. Rick Absher will be officiating. Clifford will be laid to rest beside his beloved Gertrude in the church cemetery. His grandchildren will carry him to his final resting place. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 4th, at the church from 6 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Saturday.

The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to the Grundy Mountain Mission School, 1760 Edgewater Drive, Grundy, VA 24614.

Condolences may be sent to the family's guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com.

Arrangements by Melton Mortuary and Cremation Center, Beckley.
