Anna was a descendant of Polish/French/German immigrants. Her father, Josef, came to America from Poland with his parents, Katrina Bryson and Anton Tjlliawaski in the 1800's according to "History of Rice. County Families," and settled in Missouri. Once in the U.S., the family name was shortened to Tillyia and then to Tilly. After the death of Katrina, Anton married (2) Justinee Kroll in Missouri in 1860, and in 1862, Anton moved his family to Blue Earth, Minnesota. Josef fought for the Confederacy during the Civil war although three of his brothers fought for the Union, not an unusual occurrence in families living in border states such as Missouri.
Anna's mother, Margaretha, was a daughter of Louise DeLarue (who immigrated to Germany from Nancy, France) and Paul Gast. Margaretha came to the U.S. at age 17 with her parents, according to the "History of Rice County Families."
