Dr. William Thomas Tilden of Scituate, a psychiatrist, died Wednesday at his home. He was 57.

Born in West Roxbury, he grew up in Scituate and graduated from Scituate High School.

Dr. Tilden was an Army veteran of Vietnam.

When he returned from service, he attended Boston State College, where he received a bachelor's degree in psychology. Later he earned a master's degree in psychology from Suffolk University, and his doctorate in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Tilden worked as the clinical director of child and adolescent programs at Bay State Community Services in Quincy, and had a practice in Cohasset for the past four years. He had a long career working in residential programs in California with American Indians, inner-city youth and within drug and alcohol treatment programs as well as in the Granite House residential program in Quincy MA

He was a member of the American Psychological Association.

He loved spending time with his children and enjoyed gardening and carpentry. He was an avid sailor and longtime Boston sports fan.

Dr. Tilden is survived by his wife, Mary Jane "Janey" (Sheehan); a son, Charles Lawrence of Scituate; a daughter, Caitriona Alice of Scituate; a sister, Eileen Fearing of Florida; his mother, Evangeline (Beote); and two nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, Scituate.

Burial will follow in Cudworth Cemetery, Scituate.
